Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex turns 55
The Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex was solemnly opened on 25 September 1971. In early September 2026, it welcomed its 29-millionth visitor. The count dates back to 1956, when the Defense Museum was opened, which 55 years ago became the heart of the newly established memorial complex. In 2026, the fortress has been visited by about 700,000 people, including participants in events and guided tour groups. Half of them are Belarusians, while the rest represent 43 countries worldwide. The memorial complex offers visitors over 20 types of services, such as museum lessons, lectures, traveling exhibitions, and film screenings. The development of the grounds continues as new sites open. Under the Belarus-Russia Union State project implemented in 2024–2026, areas were prepared for a future museum and educational center. The southern barracks will house a library, a conference hall, and classrooms for lessons on various topics related to the history of Belarus, the Great Patriotic War, and the Brest Fortress. The complex is listed on the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus.
